My first 30 Questions in French

Here's our list of the 30 most essential questions you'll need if you are just starting to learn French.  Before you start, make sure to study our guide to the top 20 French phrases

Let's start with a question for the cowards among us:

  • Parlez-vous anglais?
    Do you speak English?

Come on, we can do better than that:

Getting to know you...

whats your name in french

Here are the classics, which you really should know already:

  • Comment vous appelez-vous ?*
    What's your name?
  • Quel âge avez-vous ?
    How old are you?
  • Vous êtes d'où ?
    Where are you from?
  • Vivez-vous ici?
    Do you live here?

* In French we literally ask: "What do you call yourself?"

Want to ask about someone's job?:

  • Vous travaillez dans quoi?
    What do you do? (job)

Communication problems?

When you learn a foreign language you'll need an effective strategy for dealing with communication problems. Don't just nod and say 'oui' to everything!

  • Pouvez-vous répéter s'il vous plait ?
    Can you repeat that, please?

Eating and Drinking

french restaurant questions

Food is taken incredibly seriously in most French-speaking countries.

  • Pourriez-vous nous recommander un bon restaurant par ici?
Can you recommend a good restaurant near here?
  • À quelle heure ouvre le bar?
    When does the bar open?
  • Avez-vous le menu en anglais?
Do you have the menu in English?
  • Pourrions-nous voir la liste des vins ?
Can we see the wine list?

Now comes perhaps the most important travellers' phrase of all times:

  • Excusez-moi, où sont les toilettes ?
Excuse me, where are the toilets?

Ordering and asking for the bill

  • Je pourrais avoir une bière s'il vous plait ?
Could I have a beer, please?
  • La note, s'il vous plait.
Could we have the bill, please?

Asking for directions

Forget Google Maps! One of the joys of travel is asking a local person for directions.

  • Quel est chemin jusqu'au Louvre ?
How do we get to the Louvre?
  • La Tour Eiffel est par là ?
Is this the way to the Eiffel Tower?
  • Où se trouve la bouche de métro la plus proche ?
Where is the nearest metro station?

Let's make things a little more polite, shall we?

  • Excusez-moi, pourriez-vous me dire où se trouve la bouche de métro la plus proche ?
Excuse me, can you tell me where the nearest metro station is?

Planes, trains and...taxis

  • À quelle heure part le train ?

Is this the train to the airport?
